The Story Behind the Board

Three Generations.
One Passion.

It started in the early 1990s on the dunes of Port Lincoln, South Australia. John Bertram — a craftsman at heart — built the first Squids sandboard by hand with his son Michael and brother Shane. What began as a family passion quickly became a legend in the local sandboarding community.

Today, that legacy lives on through Clay Bertram, who carries forward over 50 years of combined family craftsmanship into every single board. Each Squids board is still handmade in Port Lincoln, individually numbered, and built to last on Australia's most iconic dunes.

Early 1990s

John Bertram begins crafting sandboards in Port Lincoln with his son Michael and brother Shane — planting the seed of what would become Squids Sandboards.

The Craft Grows

The Bertram family refines their technique over decades, building up 50+ years of combined experience making boards purpose-built for Australian sand dunes.

2020 — Squids Launches

Clay Bertram officially launches Squids Sandboards, bringing the family's handcraft tradition to adventurers across Australia. Every board is individually numbered and verified.

Today

Stocked in 8 stores nationally and available online through Adventure Gear, Squids boards are ridden on dunes from the Nullarbor to the Whitsundays.
